Today marks the 29th anniversary of Boyz n The Hood
Boyz n the Hood was released nationwide, in the US, 29 years ago today. I know. I feel old too.
Over the years, it has become regarded as a classic and loved by many. This movie was the directorial debut for John Singleton, then only 23 years old, and the acting debut for both Ice Cube and Morris Chesnut. In addition to being nominated for and winning various awards, in 2002, the United States Library of Congress selected Boyz n the Hood for preservation in the National Film Registry because it was considered culturally significant.
It was one of the first movies that actually made me care about the characters like I knew them. I wouldn't be surprised if people still scream "RICKYYYYY!" at Morris Chesnut to this day.
When we were in the midst of designing our logo, we wanted to use the same font but finding one that resembled the iconic lettering was futile. We started playing around with other ideas but nothing felt right. So one day, I tried drawing a basic sketch, just to see if I was capable of creating the font style myself. It looked decent so I opened up Photoshop and got to work.
Step 1:
I extracted the letters from the Boyz n the Hood logo that could be used in Nuthin' But a Tee Thang's logo.
Step 2:
I then created each letter that didn't exist, trying to keep close to the style of the original letters.
Step 3:
I tried out different layouts for the placement of the words.
Step 4:
Once I decided on a layout, I cleaned up the lines.
Step 5:
I'm used to using Photoshop but I have been experimenting with Sketch on and off for the last year or so. So I decided to switch to Sketch to do the final edits because I wanted to use a vector based editor for smoother lines.
And voila! Here's the final product with our tagline.
Since the creation of the logo, we've also added a crown logo mark for smaller design layouts.
